QR (Quick Response) Codes…love them or hate them?

Originally designed for the Automotive Industry then adapted to other industries due to it’s fast readability and large storage design.  Some believe they are an excellent marketing tool targeting mobile users with smartphones.  And since the QR Codes can hold four different types of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, Kanji), marketers can develop very diverse campaigns tailored to their product or campaign.

QR Codes are popping up everywhere.  Not only on product packaging, you’ll find them on direct mailings, business cards, emails, bumper stickers…I’ve even seen them alongside the names of Journalists on the Local TV Newscasts.

As QR Codes become more popular, from a marketing standpoint, you will most likely to want them to stand out from the standard black and white block image.  There are tools out there now that allow you to insert your own logo, change the design, and colors.

Ever created an Infographic?  You know…one of those graphs that combine Data & Graphics that give you that “Wow” impression when it loads a full web page? lol  There are some tools out there to help create specialized Infographics such as Resume’s or LinkedIn Profiles.  Or you can create your own with a graphics program such as Photoshop.  

Visual.ly is now rolling out a tool to easily create Infographics and makes it even easier to share it across your Social Media Networks, Blogs, Websites, email, etc.  They currently only have a limited amount of tools to start, but they promise a full list of new tools coming soon.

I decided to try it out.  One of their featured tools is to compare Twitter accounts with a SXSW Theme.  So I compared myself to my Twitter Friend Irene Kimmel (@irenekimmel).  The output was very impressive! (See below.).  My only complaint is that since I changed my Twitter Username last week, the graphic is only showing one week of stats.  Not sure if this is a Twitter bug or Visual.ly issue since by changing my name I kept my years and years of Twitter history.

Have you seen KONY 2012?  This is probably one of the most explosive viral videos so far.  In 6 Days, this video has been viewed over 70 Million times.  And that is just on it’s original direct link.

If you’re one of the few people are not familiar with it, KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

Yes, there is a lot of Social “Fire Power” behind it such as Will Smith, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Oprah, Rihanna…just to name a few who have supported this campaign.  But it still takes the average Social Media user to retweet, post, share in many different ways for it to make the mark that this viral campaign has made.

Also take note, that for something to go “Viral” doesn’t mean it has to be a world wide phenomenon.  Viral can be directed to certain demographics, geography, industry, etc.  Even reaching smaller groups, it can be powerful.

I just came across this Blog Post about using Google+ for Small Business from ViralBlog.

This article makes some great points, especially on the Pro side.  However, I tend to disagree with one item on the Con side of their list.  Yes, Google+ has a smaller audience, however, it is an audience of “early adopters” who im many cases have a larger social media influence as compared to other typical Social Media users.

I do believe Google+ is here to stay and is a viable solution for Small Businesses in this Social Media World.

Twitter Badge 1 Rebranding Tip   Twitter

I’ve had my Twitter name Wireless_Geek since I started Tweeting several years ago.  At that point I was heavily focused in the latest Technology of the Wireless Industry.  But over the past couple years, I’ve been less “Wireless”.  So it would only make sense to rebrand my Twitter name towards my new endeavors.  But beware…if takes some careful planning before you just change your Twitter Name in the Twitter Account Preferences.

Here are some helpful steps to consider:

1. Twitter  Name – (ok…most obvious) – Since I’m beginning to do Business as Infusion Media, I wanted to find a name closely related.  However, since Twitter Branding hasn’t gone mainstream (and the jury is still out on the pricing for Branded Pages), I decided to do a slight variation and merge it with my Geek self brand as well.  So I went with @InfusedGeek.  I guess I could have done a totally different account and name it more towards the brand, but at this point I weighed the pros & cons and decided  to go with the rename.  However, after I changed my Twitter name, I recreated my old Twitter Name using a second email address with my new profile info in the bio.  Also, I will be able to reply to any tweets that are directed to the old name.

2.  Twitter Background & Avatar – Keep this in consideration.  You may want to change to Twitter profile background & avatar to reflect the name change.  I personally have decided to wait a few days to do this in order not to confuse followers at first.

3.  Websites – Make a list of websites where you have profiled your Twitter Name. e.g. Facebook, Google+, Blogs (Profile, footers, widgets, etc), Bit.ly (and/or other URL shorteners), LinkedIn, About.Me, Buffer App, …..

4.  Email Signatures – Do you have your Twitter name listed in your Email Signature?  If so, be sure to change it!

5.  Other Media – Many people have their Twitter name coded into Profile pictures and other media.  Also, any QR Codes, Business Cards, etc need to be remembered as well.

LinkedIn…are you familiar with it?  It’s one of the most popular Social Networks geared specifically for Business Networking.  It’s a great asset for individuals to expand their network and even jobseekers.  You can join Groups for valuable discussions for almost any Business related subject, give (and request) recommendations, search & apply for jobs….so many advantages for the individual.

And LinkedIn is also a must have tool for Small businesses.  SB’s can set up their own “Page” similar to Facebook.  I actually just set up a Business Page for Infusion Media the other day.  You start by setting up basic information about the Company.  Then you can actually link employees who are on LinkedIn to the Company.  Businesses can also advertise open positions from the Page profile and link news feeds/blogs.

But where I believe the real advantage for Businesses using the LinkedIn Page is the Product & Services Feature.  You can setup an extensive description of the products and/or services that your Company offers.  And then other LinkedIn members can leave recommendations/reviews on the products and services.  Oh yeah…SEO techniques can be applied to the Page as well!  Such a great Marketing tool!

Timelines for Facebook Pages are here.  Administrators of Pages can start migrating them over today.  And on March 30th, all remaining Pages will be converted to the new Timeline format.

I converted over my new Infusion Media Page earlier today.  It went without any issues overall.  I first tried to use an existing photo for the Cover, however, I personally wasn’t happy with it, so I created a custom picture for the cover.  One note, be aware that the Profile photo will be in the left hand corner of the Cover photo, so make sure that it doesn’t cover up anything important.

One thing that I really do like about the new Page format is the Admin Panel.  Not only do you have a snapshot of notifications and insights, but you have a new separate log of new “likes”.  And now Facebook users can directly message the Admin of Pages…very happy to see this feature added!
